Are Coquitlam Bridges Safe During an Earthquake? Engineers check seismic vulnerabilities

The City of Coquitlam assessment will also include an assessment of the soil conditions under each structure.

Coquitlam takes a look at bridges and flyovers to see their suitability in the event of an earthquake.

City engineers and consultants are now surveying the infrastructure as part of the Bridges Project’s earthquake risk assessment project.

The City Council is supporting the work by backing a bid to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) for a similar $25,000 grant.

At its last meeting of the year on December 12, the Board voted unanimously to endorse the grant application due December 29.

In his report, Jaime Boan, Coquitlam’s general manager of engineering and public works, did not mention the structures under consideration.

However, he wrote that the review began in July on the earthquake readiness of the bridges “as previously noted as having a medium to high risk of earthquake exposure”.

In addition, the assessment will include an assessment of the soil conditions under each structure.

Once the study is complete, city staff will prioritize bridges that need updating or replacement.

The UBCM Asset Management Planning Program was established in 2014 with a $1.5 million grant from the British Columbia Department of Municipal Affairs. Since then, it has contributed an additional $2.75 million to planning grants, training subsidies, and asset management resource development.

Between 2014 and 2021, UBCM approved funds for the following Tri-City municipalities:

Belcara: $21,450, Coquitlam: $10,000 Port Coquitlam: $30,000 Port Moody: $20,825
