World No. 22 Chris Dobie claims comments from two-time PDC World Darts Champion Gary Anderson helped fuel his upset win at Alexandra Palace.
Anderson, a pre-match favorite who lifted the trophy in 2015 and 2016, was on track to claim his 50th tournament win on the court after taking the opening set. But the Scotsman gave up the early advantage and suffered an emphatic 4-1 defeat, after upsetting his former goalkeeper midway through the match.
“Gary said something to us on the last break and I didn’t like that, so there was no way we could win that match after that,” Dobbie, 32, told Sky Sports.
“It kind of upset us. But I came out, the guy that I am. I tried to forget him. He’s a class boy but I didn’t agree with what he said. I won’t say [what he said]It was just something I didn’t like.
“He’s one of the big names in darts and has been for a while, so it’s a massive win.”
England’s Dobbie will face either Rob Cross or Mervyn King in the next round after reaching the last 16 for the fourth time in five years.
Unseeded Alan Souttar has vowed to continue upsetting the world’s best player after winning 12 of his last 13 matches to stun UK Open champion Danny Noubert.
The Dundee fireman feared he would be “beaten” after falling two sets to Dutchman Nobert but fought back to claim a 4-2 victory and one of the best wins of his career, which included an impressive 130-point finish.
“He disappeared in the middle of the match and I took every opportunity I got,” Sutar, who will face Germany’s Gabriel Clemens in the last 16, told PDC Darts.
“He’s No. 9 in the world, provisional No. 8, maybe a Premier League player, so for me to beat players like that I love that, I definitely like going toe-to-toe and taking people.
“I’m not seeded and I’m going to keep throwing out the seeds, let’s try.”
