Jurgen Klopp’s immediate reaction to the news that Liverpool had reached an agreement to sign Cody Gakbo from PSV Eindhoven, on a work permit, was: “We’re really excited to be able to work with him.”
The striker will officially join the Reds at the start of the January transfer window after successfully passing his medical and agreeing to personal terms at the AXA Training Center on Wednesday.
Gakpo arrived at Anfield after an impressive World Cup display for the Netherlands, scoring three times in five matches for his country.
And while Klopp is confident he can make an immediate impact at his new club, the boss believes that, at only 23, there is a lot to come from Liverpool’s new number 18 shirt.
The boss told Liverpoolfc.com: “It’s really great news for us that we managed to do it and I have to say it was a fantastic job by everyone involved, especially Julian. [Ward].
“The work that has been done has been really impressive and in the end we’ve managed to sign a player we’ve known for some time and who we believe will have a really bright future with us.
Cody Gakbo: First interview
“There’s a lot to like about Cody. He’s still only 23 but he’s already got a lot of experience.
“He was PSV’s captain, he was the best player in the Netherlands last season and, as many people have just watched, he also had a fantastic World Cup with his country.
“So, obviously he’s already a really good player, but his age also means he has the potential to become even better.
“Offensively, he’s versatile and on top of that we know he’s a smart footballer and also a smart person, so we’re really excited to work with him.”
