While one of the local lads took on the role of the leading man, another provided the comic subplot. As Leeds-born Erling Haaland scored twice on his debut at Elland Road, Calvin Phillips, who had more time on the Yorkshire ground, was the unused substitute targeted in the cheers that entertained him. Considered overweight last week, Pep Guardiola was allowed back into the squad if he wasn’t used, the hometown crowd began with, “Calvin Phillips, eat whatever he wants.” They moved to chants of “You fat bastard” and “You’re too fat to play for Leeds”. Phillips took it all in with good heart and then sang, in time-honoured style, as “Yorkshire Pirlow”.
It was all soulful. In the pantomime season, there was a pivotal element to it. With his Manchester City career yet to begin between injury and the World Cup and Guardiola’s public criticism of his condition, it may have ranked as a highlight of his campaign.
At least, unlike some of his former Leeds players, he retains a place in his old club’s sensibilities. At least this time Guardiola praised him, even if it was excessive. “He has a perfect body and is very sexy,” said the city manager, who could be prone to sarcasm and exaggeration.
If an unflattering comparison can be drawn with Haaland, the summer signing who has proven to be ubiquitous, who tallies nearly 26 goals for every two minutes Phillips has been on the pitch – just 54 so far – there is a different kind of contrast to another English recruit, add. Another expensive he did not settle in immediately but played frequently unlike the former Leeds player. However, Guardiola tends to improve footballers, but Phillips’ best performances to date have come for Marcelo Bielsa and Jack Grealish for Dean Smith.
Grealish could look against Haaland. They are defined by their statistics, but in different ways. For the English player, the biggest number is his transfer fee, for the Norwegian player, his goal tally. “The numbers are unbelievable but I have the feeling he doesn’t come here just for the numbers,” Guardiola said of a man with 20 Premier League goals who is on track to score 53 in the top flight. Meanwhile, Grealish has come to Elland Road without any help this season: nothing in the Premier League, nothing in the Champions League, nothing at City, nothing in England. Given the galaxy of attacking talent and Haaland’s goalscoring gift, it seemed more difficult to score any goals than some. Kevin De Bruyne, after all, had 14 assists before Christmas and, if it may be strange, Haaland has three, which he is unable to save himself.
Then, after a 22-game unassisted run, Grealish mustered two plays into a 13-minute span. He has now set up as many City goals this season as John Stones and Sergio Gomez, both of whom have similar duties. If Grealish had been hampered by his teammates’ finishing – he already has the fourth-highest pass expectation in the Premier League among a City side – he might have had a bit of late luck when Ilan Meslier had to save Haaland’s second goal. Instead, Grealish’s mishandling led to his second assist, although the encouraging element was that it came in one match with the striker; Perhaps an understanding is being forged. However, the first thing he did was all his work, reading Liam Cooper’s weak pass, breaking in, and giving Haaland an open goal rather than kicking himself.
“He shows the quality to be generous,” said Guardiola. “He is very humble and [it was] The perfect help for Erling.”
However, the inconsequential element was that the statistically best game of Grealish’s campaign was far from the best in other respects. He might have scored twice in the second half, but he should have scored twice in the first half. Two shots were sent high into the Yorkshire skies; One was a hideous miss. A year and a half into his City career, Grealish has yet to master the key ingredient to the winger’s success under Guardiola: long range and finishing.

And his coach said, “In the first half, he missed chances, and he has to improve on that and his mentality and be aggressive there. I will score a goal, I will score a goal.” “He has to be more ambitious. He has to score more goals and be competitive because he has the quality to do that.”
It marked a shift in tone. Grealish can be likably outgoing and has often admitted he should score more goals. Guardiola tended to deny it. To him, it seemed too simplistic to judge the signature of a British record on his finished product.
But with one goal and two assists this season, he’s still weak. Haaland emphasized that it is rarely important this season, but the fruitful understanding was between De Bruyne and the striker, not the record signing and scorer. Numbers have rarely been added to Grealish in his City career, and even after he finally fell off the season mark, Guardiola admitted it. It seemed a more relevant comment than his assessment of Phillips’ physique.
