Jurgen Klopp is ‘not very positive’ about signing the papers for Cody Gakbo when Liverpool take on Brentford on January 2.
Liverpool announced Jakobo as their latest signing late on Wednesday night, but the Dutchman will not officially join the club until the start of January.
In England, the transfer window opens on New Year’s Day, while in the Netherlands it will open the next day – a UK bank holiday.
So, there are doubts whether Gakpo will get his work permit in time to appear at Brentford on Monday, with Klopp reflecting that in his pre-Leicester press conference.
“What I’ve heard now – so we’re obviously very early on, which is good – there might be a chance for Brentford,” he told reporters.
“But I really don’t think so, because January 1st is a bank holiday, and all the papers, other people have to sign on the second day until lunchtime.
“I’m not too sure that will happen!”
Klopp added: “We wouldn’t rush it anyway, so probably [against] Wolves “.
Around reports about Gakpo’s move to Merseyside, there has been a lot of Virgil van Dijk’s role in persuading his international team-mate to join Liverpool.
But Klopp played down Van Dijk’s influence on the deal, insisting that when it came to convincing the new number 18 holder to make the move, it was a “home run”.
“Before he signs technically, yeah [Virgil spoke to him]The director admitted.
Verg was involved from a specific moment on, but we didn’t tell him to ‘talk to him’.
When I was allowed to speak to him, I spoke to him.
“Some of these beautiful moments when you’re a manager of Liverpool Football Club, you think you have to impress someone and you realize the door is wide open.
That was on his home turf. We didn’t need Virgil to convince him, but then, obviously, Virgil loves to engage in these kinds of things.
“He’s also said his word. Things are good.”
