US tornado brings ‘life-threatening’ Met Office warns of amber weather in Scotland

The killer hurricane that has brought temperatures down the United States is set to bring torrential rain, wind, snow and sleet across Scotland.

The Met Office issued three weather warnings across the country.

The forecaster issued a yellow warning of heavy rain starting at 3am on Friday for 15 hours covering Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling.

An amber warning for rain, which poses a risk to life, will come into effect for Dumfries, Galloway and Ayrshire on Friday at the same time.

Meteorologist Simon Partridge said the wet and windy weather was caused by the explosive hurricane in the United States.

“The weather in the UK will continue to be unstable with further bouts of wet and windy weather due to the strengthening of the jet stream due to the weather in the US,” he said.

A Yellow Snow and Ice Warning has been issued covering all of northern Scotland from midnight Thursday until 9pm on Friday.

It covers the Isles of Lewis and Skye in the west, down to the northern coast of the mainland, as far east as Inverurie, and as far south as the Koala Peninsula.

Partridge said the impact on the UK would be “nowhere near as great” as it was on the US.

“Its impact on the UK is nowhere near as dramatic because this system has brought so much cold air south, across the US,” he said.

In fact, the hurricane only has an impact on the United Kingdom due to its impact on the North Atlantic Jet Stream.

“The effect that (the bomb cyclone) has is to strengthen the jet stream because the jet stream is mainly driven by temperature differences.

“So the stronger the extreme difference in temperature between the northern rim and the southern rim, the stronger the jet stream becomes.”

He said the damaging effect on the UK would be bouts of wet and windy weather over the next seven to 10 days.

Flooding and travel disruptions are expected across the country with challenging driving conditions and some road closures expected in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, Perth, Ayrshire, Dumfries, Galloway, Argyll and Bute.

Meteorologists said that wherever floods occur, there is a chance that train and bus services will be delayed or cancelled.

It comes after ScotRail has resumed normal service after most trains were canceled over the Christmas period due to a strike by Network Rail workers.

Amidst heavy rains, there is a possibility that some communities could become isolated due to flooded roads, the Met Office said.

Homes and businesses can flood, causing damage to some buildings as well.
