The Brazilian legend’s Instagram account paid tribute to the great man himself

One of the most legendary soccer players in history, Pele won three World Cups in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

He also became Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 77 goals in 92 matches – a record only recently achieved by Neymar.

And the club in which Pele spent his entire football career in Brazil – Santos – tweeted a picture of the crown with the message “Eternal”, which translates as “eternal”, after his death was announced by his family.

Officially, Pele scored 757 goals in 831 matches during an impressive career from 1957 to 1977, although Santos claims his tally was closer to 1,000.

Whatever the numbers, there is no doubting his impact on football, as his talent redefined what was possible on the pitch.

Santos published their own tribute to Pelé

The current Brazilian star Neymar, who equaled Pele’s international record at the World Cup in Qatar, topped the honors as he posted an influential message on social media.

The PSG striker wrote on Instagram: “Before Pele, 10 was just a number. I read that phrase somewhere, at some point.

But this sentence is, well, incomplete. I used to say before Pele that football was just a sport. Pele changed everything.

“He turned football into art, into entertainment. He gave a voice to the poor, blacks and most of them: he gave a vision for Brazil.

“Football and Brazil have raised their status thanks to the King. He is gone, but his magic remains.

“Pellet forever.”

Neymar paid an emotional tribute to Pele

Another Brazilian legend, Ronaldo, also paid tribute to the sentiment.

He said: Farid. Fabulous. idiomatic. creative. perfect. one of a kind. Where Pele arrived, he stayed. Without ever leaving the summit, he leaves us today. King of Football – Only one is the greatest of all time.

“The world of mourning. The sorrow of parting mixed with the great pride of written history.

“What a privilege to come after you, my friend. Your talent is a school that every player must pass through. Your legacy will transcend generations. And that is how you will survive. Today and always, we celebrate you.”

“Thank you, Pele. Rest in peace.”

Argentine World Cup winner Lionel Messi posted a photo of himself on Instagram with Pele with the message: “Rest in peace, @pele”.

Cristiano Ronaldo also shared a photo of himself receiving an award from Pele and wrote: “My deepest condolences to all of Brazil, and in particular to the family of Mr. Edson Arantes do Nascimento.

A mere ‘goodbye’ to eternal king Pele will not be enough to express the anguish currently gripping the entire football world.

An inspiration to many millions, a reference from yesterday and today forever. The affection he always showed me was reciprocated in every moment we shared, even from a distance.

“He will never be forgotten and his memory will live on forever in all of us football fans. Rest in peace, King Pele.”

“It was an honor for me to participate in a presentation with him and send my sincere condolences to his family, friends and the Brazilian people.”

Sir Geoff Hurst, England’s treble-winning 1966 World Cup champion, tweeted: “I have so many memories of Pele, without a doubt the best footballer I played against (with Bobby Moore being the best footballer I played alongside).

“For me Pele remains the greatest of all time and I am proud to be on the field with him. RIP Pele and thank you.”
