American criminology student Brian Christopher Kohberger is in custody after being charged with first-degree murder.
He is accused of killing Kylie Goncalves, Maddie Maugin, Zana Kernodel and Ethan Chapin, who were stabbed to death in Moscow, Idaho in the early hours of November 13 in a case that left the small community in which they lived desperate for answers.
An autopsy showed that the four were most likely asleep when they were attacked. Some of them had defensive wounds and each of them was stabbed multiple times.
So what do we know about the man being held on suspicion of his death?
Kohberger is 28 and a doctoral student in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Washington State University, just a short drive across the state line from the University of Idaho.
He is also a teaching assistant in the university’s criminal justice and criminology program, according to the WSU Directory Online.
University police assisted Idaho law enforcement in executing search warrants at Kohberger’s home and office on campus.
He graduated from Northampton Community College in Pennsylvania in 2018 with an Associate of Arts degree in Psychology.

‘Extreme interest in crime’
DeSales University of Pennsylvania said he received his bachelor’s degree in 2020 and completed his graduate studies in June 2022.
He was arrested by Pennsylvania State Police early Friday morning at an address in the state’s Chestnuthill Township and is being held for extradition to the State of Idaho on a warrant for first-degree murder.
A Sky News partner told NBC News that Kohberger had recently been living in an apartment in Pullman, Washington, and appeared to take a keen interest in crime.

WSU criminal justice graduate student Ben Roberts told the channel that Kohberger seemed confident and outgoing, but also seemed like he was “always looking for a way to fit in.”
“It’s completely off the mark,” Roberts told the Associated Press. “I honestly related to him being so embarrassing.”
studied criminals
According to NBC, seven months ago, someone going by the name of Bryan Kohberger took part in a research project that required him to communicate directly with people who had been arrested.
At the time, the person identified himself as a “student investigator” at DeSales University and was using an email address issued by the school.

Kohberger wrote in a post that appeared seven months ago on the Reddit community for ex-prisoners.
“In particular, this study seeks to understand the story behind your most recent criminal offense, focusing on your thoughts and feelings throughout your experience.”
The stabbing has rocked the small town of Moscow, Idaho, a farming community of about 25,000 people — including nearly 11,000 students — tucked into the rolling hills of Idaho’s northern Palos region.
An extradition hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
