Rishi Sunak warns UK problems won’t ‘go away’ in 2023 after ‘difficult’ 12 months in New Year’s message | Politics news

Rishi Sunak warned that the UK’s problems will not “go away” in 2023 after a “difficult” 12 months in his New Year message.

The prime minister promised that “the best of Britain” would be on display in the coming months as he pledged continued support for Ukraine.

He also predicted that the coronation of King Charles on May 6 would bring the country together.

But he admitted last year that he had been “tough”.

“Just as we recovered from an unprecedented global pandemic, Russia launched a barbaric and illegal invasion across Ukraine,” Sunak said.

“This has had a profound economic impact around the world, and the UK is not immune from it.

“Now, I know many of you have felt this effect at home. That is why this government has made difficult but fair decisions to control borrowing and debt.

Because of these decisions, we were able to help the most vulnerable groups face the high cost of energy bills. “

The prime minister, who only entered 10th in October after Liz Truss’ short-lived premiership, added: “Three months ago I stood on the steps of Downing Street and promised I would work relentlessly on the things that mattered most to you.

“Since then, this Government has taken decisive action to support our NHS with record resources to tackle the backlog – more funding, more doctors, more nurses.

“We are also tackling illegal immigration and preventing criminals from abusing our asylum system.”

Sunak said he would “not pretend all our problems will disappear in the new year” but said 2023 was an opportunity to “show the best of Britain on the world stage”.

Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer used his New Year’s message to also acknowledge that the year has been “a very difficult year” and said the UK “needs change”.

Sir Keir, whose party ranks much higher than the Tories, mentioned the death of the Queen and the success of the Lionesses at Euro 22.

While he said the UK should continue to support Ukraine, he said that next year is a “new chapter” for the country ahead of the coronation.

He said Labor would continue to champion the cause of a “New Britain” that would reform faltering public services and “develop the economy for all”.

Promising to “restore faith” in politics as a “force for good”, he said: “For Britain to become a fairer, greener, more dynamic country – we need a whole new way of doing politics.

“After all we’ve been through together, this is what Britain deserves.”

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said times were “difficult” but said the new year presented “an opportunity to turn the page and look forward”.

He added, “Although things are difficult for millions, I feel change is possible – so I look forward to the new year with hope and optimism.”
