Marcus Rashford: Manchester United striker dropped by manager Erik ten Hag for disciplinary reasons

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed he has dropped England striker Marcus Rashford to the bench for a trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers due to an “internal disciplinary” issue. Rashford was in fine form for a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest in United’s first league game after the World Cup, scoring one and setting up another.

So it came as a surprise when he was named on the bench for the Wolves match, despite the match being goalless at halftime, the England international being brought on in the second half.

And with United heading into a stalemate, he would break the deadlock with his 11th goal of the season with just 14 minutes left to play.

Speaking to BT Sport before the match, Ten Hag confirmed it was an “internal disciplinary” issue, adding that it was down to “our rules”.

In the studio before the match, former Manchester United and BT Sport analyst Paul Scholes praised Ten Hag for how he handled the matter.

“It’s hard to really know the truth,” Scholes said. “He said internally, you know, you think maybe he’s late, something like that. But I love him, the way he’s really about honesty.”

“he is [Rashford] It’s going to be a big part of the day, it should be a big part of the day. He had entered this match expecting to score goals and win.

“So, look, to stand by his guns like he did…we’ll see if it’s a wise decision that comes down to the end game.”

He added, “I love the way he’s been with him, he doesn’t care who he is. Today Marcus Rashford will be the first name on his team and he obviously did something that upset him and the rest of the team because we will.”

Rio Ferdinand echoed his former team-mate’s opinion, saying: “The most important people are the players in that dressing room, and if they respond to that kind of decision with respect and a nod and move on: ‘You know why, it’s for me, they’re all treated By the same token, you step out of line and get punished for it instantly,” that can only be positive in this dressing room.

“I think over the last few years, I think this changing room has probably needed that, a little bit of toughness and discipline.”

Former England and Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott said: “I think there are elements of previous systems at United where players are treated differently and that’s something you can’t stand as a player.

“I didn’t care how hard or loose the rules were, I just wanted it to be fair for everyone and I think as players, that’s what you want to see.”
