UK Weather: Drivers alert as Met Office issues icing warning | United Kingdom weather

Drivers are urged to exercise caution on the roads as the yellow weather warning of icing covers large areas of the UK.

The Met Office issued the alert for Scotland, Northern Ireland and most of northern England, and also warned pedestrians of the danger of slipping on icy pavements.

Traffic Scotland has warned drivers to use caution when traveling.

Stone workers have been out to tackle roads across the country and authorities have urged people to be careful.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said: “Motorists are advised to exercise caution today due to icy roads across Northern Ireland. Stopping distances increase dramatically when weather conditions are bad, so slow down and leave a larger gap between your vehicle and the vehicle in front.”

Forecasters said the icy patches were likely on untreated roads, sidewalks and bike paths.

The Met Office warning, which lasted until 11 a.m. Monday, said rain, sleet and sleet may continue to affect these areas, but ice remains the main hazard.

Next week, meteorologists said the forecast points to a possible southeast-northwest split, with high pressure clinging to the south, with low pressure to the north.

“This is likely to allow for calmer weather in the south and more unsettled conditions in the north, with showers, some longer periods of rain and strong winds,” the Met Office said.

“However, the details of how this split occurred remain uncertain, particularly with the extent of the rain and strong winds reaching to the south and east, but confidence should improve in the days ahead.”

There are 15 flood warnings in place across the UK, mostly across the south coast and southwest England.
