But small, indie studios continue to lead innovation with story, mechanics, and gameplay. This list is a collection of 23 exciting indie games, of all genres, that are expected to be released in 2023.

A few of these games were included in the 2022 round but were held back a year to get things right without pushing the developers over their limits. Similar to 2021, in 2022 the developers have realized how they operate. Workers at independent game studios, along with QA workers at larger studios, have led the way in unionizing the industry – a way to ensure less crisis, safer, healthier and happier workers.

From developer Visai Games, Venba is described as a “narrative cooking game” set in Canada in the 1980s. It focuses on an Indian mother, tasking players with cooking and remembering missing recipes. It’s a story about “family, love, loss, and more,” the developer wrote on Steam. Besides the cooking, Venba has an amazing art style and a complex story with branching conversations and separate stories.

Outerloop Games, the developer of Falcon Age, debuted Thirsty Suitors during the 2021 Game Awards. Frank and Drake are said to be classic novels like Frankenstein and Dracula, which are set in a turn-based universe that focuses on two housemates with opposite timelines.

Little Bear Chef
