Northern California was hit by a 5.4-magnitude earthquake

According to the US Geological Survey, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck Northern California Sunday morning, in an area where one had already struck less than two weeks earlier.

The quake occurred at 11:35 a.m. Pacific time, about 30 miles south of Eureka and 9 miles southeast of Rio Del, according to the USGS. According to the agency’s preliminary data, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 17.3 miles.

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office said they are monitoring the situation and working with local officials to assess the extent of the damage.

“Stay safe – check gas and water lines for damage or leaks, prepare for aftershocks, and remember to drop, cover and wait,” his office said on Twitter.

When the earthquake struck, KGO-TV in San Francisco broadcast surveillance video from inside the police department.

Earlier, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit the region, killing two people.

Rio Del, population 3,367, is located 267.5 miles north of Sacramento.

“It was insane. This time, the earthquake felt much stronger,” Rio del Mai Garnes told CNN.

Garnes reports that 27 homes were red flagged in the previous earthquake, indicating that they were unsafe due to damage. In Rio Del, another 73 homes have been yellow-flagged.
