LG’s new G3 OLED TV appears to use Micro Lens Array technology to reach an ultra-bright 2000 nits

Seemingly unable to wait for its CES press conference on Wednesday, LG went ahead and announced its lineup of OLED TVs for 2023. As expected, there are new A3, B3, C3, G3, and Z3 models to replace 2022’s A2, B2, and C2, G2, and Z2.

The A3, B3, and C3 seem, on paper at least, to be fairly similar to the models they replace (we’ll be publishing a full breakdown of the range very soon), but the G3 appears to be a massive step forward for OLED TVs in general.

LG claims the new G3 is capable of being 70% brighter than “traditional” OLEDs like the B3 which we believe is roughly equivalent to the C1 for 2021. Unfortunately, LG won’t offer a more useful brightness comparison between last year’s G3 and G2, but both Forbes (Opens in a new tab) and FlatpanelsHD (Opens in a new tab) states that the new G3 should be able to reach a peak brightness figure north of 2000 nits in Vivid Picture mode.

Even the more conservative figure of 1,500 nits that you’ll likely be able to draw from on a regular basis would be a huge improvement over last year’s G2, which measured at around 1,000 nits in similar conditions.

So how did LG achieve this? Again, LG wouldn’t say, but according to Forbes, that’s thanks to its new Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology. As the name suggests, the MLA features a layer of tiny lenses that better focus light than the panel’s OLEDs, resulting in a brighter image for the viewer.

Will the boost in brightness really be as great in the real world as it appears on paper? And would there be any downsides if that were the case? We’ll have to wait until we can get a sample in our testing labs before we can be sure, but a bit of good news is that rumor has it that the G3 won’t be much more expensive than the G2 was at launch. Confirmation of that as soon as we have it, and stay tuned for more info on LG’s full lineup of 2023 TVs.
