Chelsea are said to be preparing to sign Benfica star Enzo Fernandes for a record fee in the Premier League.

The midfielder shone at the World Cup, being named the best young player of the tournament after his Argentine side beat France in the final.

And now Chelsea are preparing to finalize a £112m transfer, according to The Mirror’s Colin Millar.

That is £6m more than Fernandes’ £106m release clause.

But the Blues are happy to pay a little extra because they are allowed to pay for 21 in installments.

This means that Benfica will make huge profits from Fernandez, after they signed him for just 8 million pounds from River Plate last summer.

Despite this, the Portuguese team tried to persuade Fernandez to stay until the end of the season, citing the fact that Chelsea might not qualify for the Champions League.

But the midfielder is believed to have rejected their pleas and then angered coach Roger Schmidt by returning to Argentina for a New Year’s Eve party.

Fernandes now needs to agree to personal terms and complete a medical before being finalized as a Chelsea player.

He could become Chelsea’s fourth signing in January following the arrest of David Davro Fofana and imminent arrivals of Andre Santos and Benoit Badiachel.

And the club appears ready to continue his spending with the midfielder’s other goals in mind.

Argentina teammate Alexis McAllister is on Chelsea’s wish-list alongside Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lafia, who are both targeted in the summer window.

These would-be arrivals could lead to this being Jorginho’s final season at Stamford Bridge.

The Italy international’s contract expires in 2023 and he wants to return to Serie A.
