Britain’s “winter of discontent” appears to be upon us in the new year after a month of bitter strikes in December that brought the country to a halt and Christmas view in jeopardy for many.

Nurses, railway staff, postal workers, G4S staff, London bus drivers, Eurostar security staff, Border Force agents, baggage handlers at Heathrow, Scottish teachers, driving examiners and National Highways workers have all walked out in recent weeks as disagreements between employers and unions over pay and working conditions falter at a time that still falters. The UK is mired in an economic crisis.

Moreover, few of these disputes were resolved, leading many unions to threaten further industry strikes in January.

Andy Furey, acting deputy general secretary of the Communications Workers Union (CWU), for example, said his organization’s dispute with Royal Mail was unlikely to be resolved anytime soon, and that plans were in place to get members balloted at the start of the new year. Possibility of new strikes.

He said the CWU’s latest offer has “declined in our face” and “there are no further conversations planned at this point.”

For its part, Royal Mail urged the CWU to accept its own offer and cancel upcoming demonstrations, insisting: “We are doing everything we can to minimize delays and keep people, businesses and the country connected.”
