Why Republicans Are Struggling to Pick a New Speaker of the House | US news

[ad_1]

It has been 100 years since American politics faced a similar mess.

The engine room of the American democratic machine is rudderless, unable to choose its own leader – the Speaker of the House.

Balloting chaos would be repeated on Tuesday, as multiple votes to choose a speaker failed to produce a winner, until one person could muster a majority.

But don’t assume that this is just messy knowledge of democracy. Fighting, division and bitterness are inside me. Within one party – a fractured and failed Republican Party.

what background?

In the November midterm elections, President Joe Biden’s Democratic Party retained control of the Senate but lost control of the House of Representatives.

The majority and power in the House of Representatives were handed over to the Republicans. Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi resigned, making way for a Republican replacement. The assumption was that it would be Kevin McCarthy.

But the midterm “red wave” – the Republican landslide due to the perceived weakness of the Biden Democrats – did not work. Defying conventional wisdom about how the incumbent’s party will fare in the midterm elections, the Democrats retained the Senate and lost the House of Representatives only by a narrow margin.

So why are Republicans struggling to choose a leader?

Two reasons: first because the party is divided into different factions – ranging from the partisan ones on the right to the more centrist bloc.

And secondly, because they only have a narrow majority which makes the calculation difficult for Kevin McCarthy who needs 218 of the 222 seats total for the Republicans.

why does it matter?

In short, without a Speaker, the House of Representatives cannot begin the business of governing and legislating. You must continue taking the speaker ballot until the candidate wins. Both camps – the OK camp (just Kevin) and the Never Kevin camp seem to be as well established as each other.

Looking back at history – in 1856, just before the American Civil War, it took two months and 133 ballots to find a speaker.

What is Kevin McCarthy’s problem?

Mr. McCarthy seemed confident he would win the votes, but his fight has become more difficult as opposition to him grows. There were originally five die-hard Republicans who “never knew Kevin”. But in Tuesday’s votes, the number rose to 14, then 19 and then 20.

In a farcical situation, a number of Republicans voted for their colleague Jim Jordan, who then voted for Mr. McCarthy and stated that he did not want the speaker.

Perhaps most comically, and most troubling for the Republican Party, Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries received more votes than McCarthy in the first three votes.

“Maybe we’ll be involved on the floor,” Kevin McCarthy told reporters after a humiliating day. “But the fight is for the conference and the country, and that’s fine with me.”

The opposition to McCarthy is led by a faction of the party – the House Freedom Caucus, a hard-right group that wants changes in the chamber’s rules.

Never Kevin’s group fielded various alternative candidates including Arizonan Andy Biggs, who was nominated by far-right Rep. Paul Gosar. On the second ballot, Jim Jordan was suggested despite not wanting the job.

Is there a Trump factor?

Yes always. Overnight, speaking to NBC News, the former president said he had not made up his mind to support McCarthy. But by morning he seemed to have come to a firmer point, telling his followers on the Truth Social that he supported him.

Trump has been blamed for the Republican Party’s lackluster performance in the midterm elections and for sowing division and division within the Republican Party itself.

A new conference broke the record?

Yeah. Besides history being made in the House Speaker election process, the 118th Congress has broken records in a number of ways.

It houses a record number of women – 149 – representing 28% of the legislature. Diversity improved in the two rooms with 58 women of color. Inside the house alone there will be a record number of Latina and black women.

The rooms are also getting younger. Only 5% of congressmen are under the age of 40 but nearly 21% of newcomers are under the age of 40. The House of Representatives now has its first-ever member of Generation Z, Democrat Maxwell Frost of Florida, who is 25 years old.

What’s on the agenda once you’ve found a speaker?

Many. Republicans will control many House committees, leading to new investigations that could shake up the political landscape.

Investigations will begin into the financial dealings of President Biden’s son Hunter, the government’s handling of immigration at the southern border, the COVID-19 pandemic and the Afghan withdrawal.

Names to watch: Kentucky’s James Kummer and Ohio’s Jim Jordan are likely the biggest players when it comes to investigations. Mr. Kummer will chair the House Oversight Committee and Mr. Jordan will chair the House Judiciary Committee.

Domestic politics aside, watch out for the real bipartisan focus on China. A new panel is set to focus on competition with China.

“The Chinese Communist Party is the greatest geopolitical threat of our lives.” McCarthy said recently in a statement.
