New World No. 1 Michael Smith has billed himself as “the Andy Murray of darts” after ending a series of big misses that sealed the long-awaited win at the World Darts Championship.
Smith had lost eight consecutive TV Grand Finals before winning the Grand Slam of Darts in November, as Bully Boy cruised to a stunning 7-4 victory over Michael van Gerwen in the World Final at Alexandra Palace to top the rankings.
The long wait for great glory is similar to Murray’s in tennis, who lost in four Grand Slam finals before eventually winning three titles, with Smith – who had lost two previous world finals – praising the depth and quality of his darts.

“I’m like Andy Murray from darts!” Smith told Sky Sports exclusively. “He went in with these three great players [Roger] federer, [Rafael] Nadal f [Novak] Djokovic.
“He made it through Queen’s and then he won the US Open, Wimbledon, Wimbledon again and he had to work really hard for it! I know he got to No. 1 in the world and then unfortunately he had injuries, although it didn’t cost him.” His career as he is still playing now.

“It’s like what we have now. The other day it was Phil Taylor and someone pushed him. Barney (Raymond van Barneveld) was there, Addie (Adrian Lewis) pushed him a little bit, and then Michael (van Gerwen) come on, and then you have Gary Anderson and Peter Wright and Jez ( Jeroen Price).
“You’ve got really great players now that anyone in the top 32 can win a TV title and it’s not just Phil Taylor that dominates the sport. The sport is now wide open, which is good.”

Smith sent the sporting world into a frenzy after completing a thrilling nine dart during the second set of an absorbing final, having watched Van Gerwen miss a d12 for a four dart nine of his own, with ‘Bully Boy’ among the millions watching the moment on Social media since the final.

“I think I was the second person to do that [make a nine-darter in the final]. To be in the perfect guy too, with the perfect 17 arrows, was unreal – an amazing feeling.

What’s next for Smith?
Smith will return to action in the inaugural Bahrain Darts Masters from January 12-13 ahead of the Nordic Darts Masters in Copenhagen from January 20-21, with the Englishman taking part in the Masters from January 27-29 before he Plays in the Kazuo Premier League. From February 2.
“I’ll take a couple of days off, fly to Bahrain and then go straight to the practice board – keep working hard and hope you keep winning,” Smith said. “I’m still playing the same as I did last year.
