No. 10 said reduce speed on the highway to 64 mph to achieve net zero targets

Our report highlights opportunities where we can wean ourselves off fossil fuels more quickly – and harness the potential of cleaner, greener and often cheaper renewable energy.

First, we need a national “war effort” to mobilize energy savings and efficiency. Upgrading the UK’s aging and overworked housing stock to high energy performance standards should be a national priority to enhance UK energy security, reduce bills and reduce climate change emissions.

Second, immediate action is possible to reduce emissions associated with oil and gas extraction. The sector has known its harmful impact since the 1990s. The UK should follow Norway’s lead and ban gas flaring altogether.

Efforts to electrify rigs must also be accelerated so they are no longer dependent on dirty fuel just to run their operations. If they fail to do so by 2027, the government must make it mandatory.

The government should also set a deadline for oil and gas licensing rounds in the North Sea. Energy security requires us to maintain licensing rounds for the time being, but it is not sustainable in the long term. The industry needs a clear direction that an end date is on the horizon.

Name and shame net zero criminals

Net zero requires every sector of the economy to pull its weight towards a low carbon future. If oil and gas sector operators fail to reduce their harmful emissions, these operators must be named and shamed.

With carbon budgets more challenging than ever and a net-zero deadline less than three decades left, real action must be taken now.

And what comes in a world without oil and gas? Our report calls for ambitious targets for wind and base-load technologies such as tidal power.

As the government has made clear in its Energy Security Strategy, nuclear power can also provide a significant base load of reliable energy. We want every developer to install solar panels on new rooftops as standard.
