Authorities confirmed this week that at least 20 apartments were damaged in the recent earthquake that rocked Northern California, where a stronger quake nearly two weeks ago killed two people and destroyed homes from their foundations.

The 5.4-magnitude aftershock struck at 10:35 a.m. New Year’s Day about 9 miles southeast of Rio Del in Humboldt County, according to the US Geological Survey.

Rio Del City Manager Kyle Knopp said inspectors placed red flags on Monday on 20 residences in one apartment complex. Knopp said inspections are continuing and officials expect to find additional homes rendered uninhabitable by the recent earthquake.

“We have new damage, and we have additional damage from the December earthquake,” he said.

Knopp said there were no reports of serious injuries from Sunday’s quake. Some residents lost water and electricity, he said, but service was restored within hours.

Rio Del was the community hardest hit by a 6.4-magnitude earthquake on December 20 that killed two people, injured more than a dozen others, shook homes off their foundations, damaged water systems, and knocked out power for thousands.
