Emma Raducano has been attacked on the “slippery” courts of Auckland after she left the court in tears following an ankle injury at the ASB Classic, less than two weeks before the Australian Open kicks off.
The Briton shone in the first set of his last-16 match against Slovakia’s Viktoria Kuzmova, winning 6-0 in just over 20 minutes.
Raducanu faced a much greater challenge in the second set, taking a treat on her left ankle near the end, before breaking down in tears at the start of the third set.
“I’ve been doing a lot of physical work in the last few months and I’ve been feeling really good and upbeat,” she said.
“So, to hold you back because of a weird injury, ankle rolling is very disappointing, the first week too. I thought I was playing some good tennis.
“The courts are incredibly slick, like very slippery, so to be honest it’s not surprising if this happens to someone… We’ll be staying over the next few days and seeing what the next steps are.”
Raducanu was broken at 2-2 and trailed 4-2 in the second set, but broke in the tenth game of the set to tie things up 5-5. The Briton was broken again in the next match, before dropping the second set 7-5.

She tried to continue playing but was unable to complete the first game of the third set, admitting that she could not continue.
Raducanu was ranked as one of the hottest tennis stars when she won the US Open in 2021. Since then her career has been plagued by injuries. She retired from matches four times in 2022 and recently had to deal with a wrist injury.
Kuzmova will face Danka Kovinic of Montenegro in the quarter-finals, after the latter beat American Lauren Davis in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to advance.
Take a look at Emma Raducano’s stunning 2021 US Open win. The tournament is back on Sky Sports 2023 Kwan: Raducano’s injury is very unfortunate | I’m sure we’ll see her at the Australian Open
Former British tennis player Barry Cowan speaks to Sky Sports News on Thursday…
“It’s really unfortunate for Emma, and it was one of those weird injuries that can happen to any tennis player.
“Most tennis players, at some point, have rolled their ankle, but if we go back to what happened, it was 5-5 in the second set, and at the time it looked harmless and more like a slip than a rolling ankle.
“She played in two more games, lost the set, then called a medical timeout, tied her ankle, and sometimes it can feel really uncomfortable when you have your ankle pulled as badly as I did.
“Unfortunately for Emma, she was only able to play one point in the third set. So let’s wish her all the best, because by all accounts the off-season has been very positive.
“And when she starts a new season it’s always with renewed hope. I’m sure she was full of confidence.
“There is still a long time until the Australian Open, and I expect her to be OK and to be able to play in Melbourne.
Barry Cowan predicts there should be enough time for Emma Raducano to recover for next week’s Australian Open after suffering an ankle injury
“In her case, you’ll find out more tomorrow morning when she gets up.
“This was the hardest part of Emma’s tennis [lack of meaningful practice]. Sometimes, unfortunately, she had to withdraw, either during a match or before an event.
“You want momentum, you want to be able to build a strong head, get some confidence, and feel like you’re just getting into the flow. But unfortunately for Raducanu, with the injuries she’s had, she’s going to be disappointed because she’s not able to build on the little bit of momentum that she has. She got it in December with a good training schedule with her new coaches.
“of course not [don’t write off Raducanu as injury prone]. This can happen to the fittest tennis player and the unfit player. It’s an ankle injury, it’s just one of those injuries.
“It’s really unfortunate for Emma that it happened this week. But it did, it’s been a year long, and I thought a scan was the right way to go, because then you know in your mind if everything’s OK.
“Sometimes with your ankle sprained you wonder with a bit of pain: ‘I don’t want to make it worse’, and that’s exactly what you don’t want to do at the start of the tennis season where you’re hoping to play 25/30 events.
“In a brutal sport, not only in terms of having to beat your opponent for three hours, but mentally and physically, you’re going to have bumps along the way.
“With this particular one, if you have any doubts at this point in the season, you’d better make sure you get the right treatment. Because what you don’t want is if he’s a little weak and prone to an even worse injury.
“It’s better to drop out of a match in January and miss just one tournament than to miss two or three months. I’m sure we’ll see Emma Raducano a week on Monday at the Australian Open.”
