Actress Joan Sydney, best known for her roles in soap operas Neighbors and A Country Practice, has died at the age of 83.
She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016 and passed away on December 28.
Longtime friend and fellow actress Sally Ann Upton confirmed the news on social media today.
Mrs. Upton paid tribute to her “dear colleague”.
“Thank you for everything you taught me, the love, the friendship, the many memories we shared that you will cherish forever,” she wrote.
Sydney is best known for her role as Matron Maggie Sloane on A Country Practice, a character she played for eight seasons from 1983 until 1990.
She won the Logie Award for Most Popular Actress for her performance in 1989.
In 2002, she joined the cast of Neighbours, playing Valda Shergold.
Born in England in 1936, Sidney grew up in Wales and trained as a classical actor at the Oldham Repertory Theatre, before moving to Australia in 1965.
She was called Joan Sydney King but dropped her surname in her career, using Joan Sydney as her stage name.
