Police investigating the death of a Kenyan LGBT activist, who was found stuffed in a metal box, have arrested a suspect.

A murder investigation is underway after the body of Edwin Chiluba was found on a road in Osin Gishu County, western Kenya, on Wednesday.

A motorcycle taxi driver said he saw the box dumped to the side of the road by an unlicensed vehicle, then told police at a nearby roadblock.

When the officers opened the box, they found the decomposing body of a man, who was described as wearing women’s clothing and identified as Mr. Chiluba.

His body was then taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital to determine the cause of death.

Police said in a message to Reuters news agency that they had arrested a man in Eldoret who was the “prime suspect” but that the investigation was continuing.

Police do not yet know what caused Mr Chiluba’s death, but he was attacked and assaulted for his past activism, according to his friend Dennis Nzioka on Twitter.

Amnesty International’s Secretary-General Agnes Callamard wrote on Twitter that a full and independent investigation must be carried out into Chiluba’s “heartbreaking” killing, “leaving no stone unturned”.

Mr. Chiluba was a fashion designer and was praised by activist Ngeri Migui, who said “he embodies fashion”.

She tweeted, “Edwin Chiluba was an amazing human being. He was daring, passionate and his energy was pure. He embodied fashion.”

Ghanaian human rights organization Rightify has called on Kenyan President William Ruto to “ensure the protection and promotion of the human rights of sexual and gender minorities.”

However, in Kenya, sex between men is illegal, with the country’s view of LGBT rights as conservative.
