Redfall is fast becoming one of the most anticipated Xbox exclusives here at PX, especially as rumblings from the impending Game Pass release start to do the rounds. Ahead of the title’s 2023 launch, game directors Harvey Smith and Riccardo Pare spoke to Gamesradar about all things Redfall, and we mean all things Redfall.
The interview is a wide-ranging affair, and touches on player expectations, the effects of other video games, and the impact of Xbox Game Pass, among other bits and pieces. One item that immediately stands out here has to do with both Smith and Bare comparing Redfall to a few other major franchises.
Bare says that while the team has seen a lot of fan comparisons to Valve’s Left 4 Dead series, few other titles better match what Redfall is striving for.
It is quite understandable that someone would come to this conclusion [Left 4 Dead comparisons]. There are four playable characters, you can play together cooperatively, and you will face the living dead. But in terms of the way you play and experience Redfall, it’s not like those games at all. Redfall is like loading up in Far Cry.”
Then Smith adds:
“Redfall sometimes feels like what you’d get if you mixed Arkane’s creative values with Far Cry 2 or STALKER”
Now, we don’t know about you guys but this sounds like a hell of a mix to us! The development team also reiterates that while Redfall is open world and features a home base and side missions among the standard story missions, Arkane is wary of the massive scope of the game world.
“In terms of freedom, there’s what you’d expect from other open worlds, but Redfall is a game on foot — the scale and pace are a little slow in that regard,”
All in all, Redfall looks really cool and the more we hear about Arkane’s upcoming co-op shooter, the more we want to move forward with it. Hopefully, this isn’t too far in the future, as reports of a May 2023 launch date are starting to come in.
