Prince Harry unleashed lashes on the monarch, the queen consort, his brother and other royals in an angry interview on ITV in which he defended his revelations, claiming that keeping quiet “only allows abusers to take offense”.

In an excerpt from his book Spear, which he read aloud during an interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby on Sunday night, Harry wrote that his interests had been “sacrificed” at Camilla’s “altar of PR”.

Asked if he was “constantly scathing” about his stepmother and the press, Harry replied: “Stinging? No part of the things I’ve said is stinging towards any member of my family, especially my stepmother. There are things that have happened that have been incredibly hurtful, some of them in the past, and some in the present.”

He accused the royal family of having a “really horrible reaction” on the day of the Queen’s death, saying the family had been on the “back foot” and witnessed “leaking and transplanting”. His words came after he was reported to have claimed in his diary that Meghan was “not welcome” at Balmoral.

In the first of several interviews broadcast before the day of the book’s publication, Harry is asked if his interests have been sacrificed for those of his father, when it comes to journalism.

Explaining the royal family’s relationship to the press, Harry said: “I love my father, I love my brother, and I love my family.” He said he did not intend to harm them or them. But regarding the tabloid press, he said “some of the members have decided to sleep with the devil” to rehabilitate their own images.

It was their choice, he said, adding, “But the moment rehab comes at the expense of others, me and my other family members, that’s where I draw the line.”

Talk about the royals vying for the spotlight. He said that William and Kate experienced this “from my father and stepmother, or their office”. He believed that, as a “reserve” for the heir, everything would be fine with him and Megan.

“How wrong I was. The same thing that William and Kate experienced from Pa and Camilla happened to us, and it happened from William and Kate’s office as well,” he said.

An excerpt from his audiobook was played where Harry said he and William told Charles: “We support Camilla. Just please don’t marry her, just be together, pa.”

Harry continues, “He didn’t reply. But she did. Right away. Soon after our private meetings with her, she began to play the long game. A campaign aimed at marriage, and eventually the crown, with the blessing of Ba we suppose.”

Stories started popping up everywhere in all the newspapers about her private conversations with Willie. The stories with subtle details, none of them coming from Willie of course. It could only have been leaked by someone else present.”

Excerpts also revealed that as the relationship between Harry and William deteriorated, they met with Charles to discuss the situation after the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh. During their exchange, William swears “on mother’s life” that he only wants Harry to be happy.

“For nearly 25 years we’ve been keeping this soul-shattering vow for times when one of us needed to be heard to be quickly believed,” Harry wrote. But he told Bradby, “The cold turned me off, as it was supposed to. Not because he used it. But because it didn’t work. I simply didn’t believe him.”

Harry said he wanted reconciliation, but with “accountability”.

When asked to justify writing the book and reveal private conversations with his family, Harry said: “The level of sophistication and drop-outs of other family members meant, in my opinion, that they’d written countless books, and surely millions of words were devoted to trying to get rid of myself and my wife that I I had to leave my country.”

Harry denied that he and Meghan had accused members of the royal family of racism in their interview with Oprah Winfrey, saying, “The British press said so.” Referring to well-reported remarks about their son Archie’s skin color, he calls it subconscious prejudice, rather than racism. He also said that the incident involving the founder of the charity, Ngozi Fulani, and Lady Susan Hussey was “a very good example of the environment within the foundation”.

When asked if William and Kate didn’t communicate with Meghan “almost from the start,” Harry replied: “Yes, fair.” He said the stereotypes had caused him “some hurdles,” adding, “American actress, divorced, biracial.”

Harry also spoke about “Beardgate”: a bizarre week-long clash in which Harry revealed he had to ask the Queen if he could keep a beard at his wedding – something forbidden by military rules, apparently. The Queen agreed, after Harry explained that his beard was “a shield for my anxiety”.

But he alleged that William later tried to order him to have her shaved. It was an “heir/reserve,” Harry said, as he also thought, because William himself had been asked to shave his beard while in uniform.

Harry admitted he felt “a little guilt” when he was walking through the crowd outside Kensington Palace after his mother’s death, and felt the tears of mourners on his hands when he shook hands with them, saying the only time he cried was at her burial.

Harry also revealed how his father blamed himself for his son’s struggles. Recounting an excerpt from the book, he read: “At dinner one night at Highgrove I and Pa talked at length about what I was experiencing.

I gave him the details, and told him story after story. Towards the end of the meal he looked at his plate and said softly: ‘I think it’s my fault. I should have gotten the help you need years ago.’

“I assured him it wasn’t his fault, but I would appreciate the apology.”

Harry also speaks with Anderson Cooper for 60 Minutes on CBS News Sunday night. Michael Strahan from Good Morning America on Monday; and Stephen Colbert on CBS’ Late Show Wednesday morning UK time.

Kensington Palace declined to comment on the interview.
