Anderson Cooper’s powerful proves that less is more

One potential surprise was that the conversation was low on California therapy parlance. Speaking to Bradby, Harry discusses “telling his truth” and “owning his story”. There was a bit of this with Cooper: Harry probably felt he didn’t have to prove how Californian and liberal he had become since he fled to America.

Cooper, if not aggressive, wasn’t afraid to spot Harry now and then. “Did you cry?” Harry asked when the Duke summoned his father, then Prince of Wales, and informed him of Diana’s death. Harry revealed that in his twenties, he would try to make himself shed tears for his mother.

“I resorted to drinking a lot,” he revealed. “I wanted to numb the feeling. I would turn to drugs too. There was this heaviness on my chest that I had felt for so many years. I was constantly trying to find a way to cry. I remember as many memories of my mom as I could. Sometimes I would watch videos [of Diana] On the Internet, hoping to cry.

Talk about the benefits of therapy — and about using psychedelic drugs to get in touch with the feelings he’s isolated.

“I would never advise people to do it recreationally,” he said. “If you are experiencing a significant loss in grief or trauma, these things have a way of working as medicine.”

In contrast to ITV, there was a focus on Harry’s time in the army. It was, he said, his creation—and a glimpse of freedom. “My military career saved me in many ways,” he said. “He took me out of the spotlight from the British press. It helped focus on a goal bigger than me. I feel normal for the first time in my life. I was a young man in my twenties with trauma.”

As with the Bradby interview, the 60 Minutes segment suffered from the fact that all of Spear’s juicy bits had already been leaked. And so there were few shells. Cooper revealed that 60 Minutes had contacted Buckingham Palace to get a response to Harry’s accusations and complaints. Palace had asked to see the clip before it aired – something CBS refused.

After the recent six-part Netflix documentary Harry and Meghan, and amid the media storm surrounding Spear, even ardent royal watchers may feel they’ve had enough. Or maybe not. Harry certainly didn’t. It will be on Stephen Colbert’s CBS chat show on Tuesday.
