A strong earthquake hit Indonesia, it was reported that tremors were felt in Australia

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Indonesia struck an area in the city of Darwin, Northern Province.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said the quake hit the Tanimbar district early on Tuesday.

There is no danger of a tsunami for Australia, but residents in Darwin in the Northern Territory, about 1,800 kilometers from Tanimbar County, have felt tremors.

The center said the quake occurred at a depth of 97 kilometers under the Banda Sea.

Longtime Darwin resident Trevor Bauer told 9News that the tremors lasted about two minutes.

“I think that was the worst I ever felt the way the tremor occurred and then the tremor got worse and worse to the point where it seemed somewhat violent.

“We got the family together, we raced outside, and you could still hear the roaring, the car was still shaking in the driveway, you could still feel the earthquakes and the dogs going absolutely crazy.”

“By the time we got everyone out, it all dissipated, everything was shaking, and the dogs were still scurrying around.

“The whole episode was two minutes long. And we still haven’t felt the aftershocks yet.”

The quake hit the Northern Territory at 3.30am today and thousands of people have reported feeling tremors in Gough, Katherine and Kununurra on the Western Australian border, Olivana Lathouris, Darwin’s 9News correspondent said.

Emergency services were inundated with calls from concerned residents but so far no structural damage has been reported.
