The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said that a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 occurred off the coast of Indonesia near the Tanimbar district on Tuesday morning.
Authorities issued tsunami warnings for Indonesia, while the earthquake’s tremor was felt as far away as Darwin in northern Australia, nearly 500 kilometers away.
The epicenter is believed to be located 100 km below the Earth’s crust. The earthquake occurred at 5.47pm Irish time.
A tsunami warning is currently in effect in Indonesia and East Timor. An amber tsunami warning, the second highest level of concern, has been issued for some areas of Indonesia.
A massive earthquake off the coast of Indonesia in 2004 triggered tsunamis that killed a quarter of a million people in one of the worst natural disasters ever recorded.
