Virgin Orbit: The head of the space agency ‘doesn’t know’ what went wrong when the mission failed to reach orbit

Britain’s first-ever space mission failed after a “anomaly” prevented a Virgin Orbit rocket from reaching orbit.
The rocket and the nine satellites it was carrying are said to have burned up in the atmosphere after the launch failure.
It was expected to land on top of water, but it burned up in Earth’s atmosphere upon return, according to New Scientist.
Just before midnight, an official announced on a live broadcast that the rocket had suffered an “anomaly” meaning it failed to reach orbit.
The launch was a chance for Virgin Orbit to show its investors what it was capable of, but the failure has plunged it by a third in after-hours trading and is set to drop $200 million.
The launch was to be the first ever rocket from UK soil, as well as the first time a satellite had been launched from Europe.
Virgin Orbit’s unusual system sees an aircraft lift the rocket up to 35,000 feet, before lowering it to carry its satellites into space.

Twitter users have called on British Business Secretary Grant Shapps to apparently edit former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson from a photo he recently shared.
The image appears to be from the Virgin Orbit website in June 2022 where the then British Prime Minister, Mr Johnson, can be clearly seen.
However, in Mr Chapp’s now-deleted post, prior to Monday’s launch of Virgin Orbit, the former prime minister appeared to be “photographed” as several Twitter users pointed out.
In a now-deleted tweet by Grant Shapps, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson appears to have been removed from the photo

The Oman satellite mission faces a setback with the failure of Virgin Orbit’s launch
Oman’s first orbital mission faces a setback with the failure of a Virgin Orbit rocket launch from the UK.
The Arab satellite, Aman, which was developed to collect high-resolution satellite images of the Earth, was one of the payloads carried by the Virgin Orbit LauncherOne rocket.
The satellite was reportedly the product of cooperation between Oman, the United States and Poland.
However, the failed launch of the rocket resulted in the loss of nine small satellites it was carrying.
The BBC reported that the satellites are insured, suggesting that the manufacturers are likely to be compensated.

Indian billionaire praises Indian Space Agency after Virgin Orbit launch failure
Indian billionaire Anand Mahindra, chairman of the Mahindra Group, praised the record of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on Twitter after the failure of the Virgin Orbit mission.
“I realize this was a very different kind of orbital launch, but it still tells me how much we should appreciate and admire ISRO’s launch record,” he said.
The Virgin Orbit mission is planned to be the first ever rocket launched from the mainland of the United Kingdom, as well as the first satellite rocket launched into space from Western Europe.
Unlike traditional launch pad-launched rockets, the company’s midair launch system used a modified Boeing 747 to carry its rocket up to 35,000 feet, before launching it to carry its satellites into orbit.
But about an hour after the rocket’s launch, the company said an “anomaly” appeared to be preventing the rocket from reaching its planned orbit.
“Launching a spacecraft always carries significant risks. Despite this, the project has succeeded in establishing a horizontal launch capability at Spaceport Cornwall,” said Matt Archer, director of commercial spaceflight at the British Space Agency.

Two more UK space launch sites are currently being developed
Two other venues in the UK are said to be in the final stages of space launch preparations.
SpaceHub Sutherland in Scotland and SaxaVord Spaceport off the Scottish coast are being developed to service small vertical rocket launches, according to Space.com.
It cost 20 million pounds ($24 million) to prepare Newquay airport for the launch of Virgin Orbit, Melissa Thorpe, head of Space Port Cornwall, said.
The British Space Agency reportedly provided funding to seven sites overall in 2017 for space-related upgrades.

1673346768ICYMI: Timeline of events leading up to the ‘anomaly’ of the Virgin Orbit mission
The Cosmic Girl giant plane carrying a Virgin Orbit rocket took off from Spaceport Cornwall at 22:02 GMT on schedule, flying 35,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean.
It then fired the 21-meter missile about an hour later off the southwest coast of Ireland.
The company’s live broadcast reported that the first stage of the rocket ignited successfully, and its two stages separated over a period of three minutes after the fall.
But just minutes after the rocket’s upper stage finished a nearly five-minute burn, Virgin Orbit announced that something had gone wrong.
“It appears that we have an anomaly that prevented us from reaching orbit. We are evaluating the information. As we find out more, we are removing our previous tweet about reaching orbit. We will share more information when we can,” the space company tweeted.
Virgin Orbit later said in a statement: “At some point during the launch of the rocket’s second stage engine and with the rocket traveling at over 11,000 miles per hour, the system encountered an anomaly, prematurely terminating the mission.”
The plane returned to Spaceport Cornwall safely as engineers tried to prove what went wrong.
“It’s not the first time we’ve been hit, it’s definitely the biggest, but I feel fine and we’ll get up and go again,” said Melissa Thorpe, president of Spaceport Cornwall.

1673344464 British business minister says: “It’s a great thing no one was harmed”
British Business Secretary Grant Shapps expressed hope that the teams behind the failed launch yesterday “will get back together once they find out exactly what went wrong”.
“The great thing about this technology is that no one was harmed. The pilots got back in the plane,” he told Sky News.
“Space is hard,” Shapps said, adding that it was yesterday’s “big moment” though.

The head of the space agency said it was “disappointing” that the Virgin Orbit launch failed to reach orbit.
British Space Agency commercial spaceflight director Matt Archer said the result of the Virgin Orbit launch was “disappointing”.
He explained that while the mission could launch the rocket into orbit, it “did not succeed in reaching the desired orbit.”
Mr Archer added that the UK remains committed to becoming the leading provider of small commercial satellite launches in Europe by 2030, “with vertical launches planned from Scotland”.

1673341551 There may be another launch at Spaceport Cornwall later this year: Virgin Orbit Chief
Dan Hart, president of Virgin Orbit, said before the launch that the company could return to Spaceport Cornwall later in 2023.
“We’re excited about the future and going back, maybe later this year, to launch again and hopefully there will be a sustained cadence,” Mr. Hart said at a pre-launch press conference.
“We want to be part of the fabric of the space community here in the UK as well as globally. That’s our aim as a company.
After the failed launch, Virgin Orbit’s president said the “first-time nature” of the mission added layers of complexity.
“We will work tirelessly to understand the nature of the failure, take corrective action, and return to orbit once the full investigation and mission assurance process is completed,” he said in a statement.

1673340864 “I don’t know the cause of the anomaly,” says the head of the space agency.
Matt Archer, director of commercial spaceflight at the British Space Agency, said the agency will work with Virgin Orbit to understand what went wrong with the launch.
“Over the coming days, we will be working closely with Virgin Orbit as they investigate the cause of this anomaly,” Archer said in a statement.
“At the moment we don’t know the cause of this anomaly,” he said, adding that despite the failure, the project succeeded in establishing a horizontal launch capability at Spaceport Cornwall.

Virgin Orbit shares fell by nearly a third after the rocket failure
Virgin Orbit is currently trading at $1.39, with its shares down about a third — a loss of more than $200 million.
The company’s stock fell less than $1.40 a share in after-hours trading yesterday after its rocket failed to reach orbit due to an “anomaly.”
While the mission did not achieve its final orbit, Virgin Orbit said its completion still marked an important step forward.
“We will work tirelessly to understand the nature of the failure, take corrective action, and return to orbit once the full investigation and mission assurance process is completed,” said Dan Hart, president of Virgin Orbit.
