Jair Bolsonaro shared a photo of himself in hospital while receiving treatment in the US, a day after his supporters ransacked Brazil’s Congress.
The former Brazilian president sought medical treatment in Orlando, Florida, on Monday, after he complained of stabbing pains he experienced during his 2018 election campaign.
He tweeted a picture of him lying in the hospital and thanked people for their “prayers and messages of speedy recovery”.
“Dear ones, I want to inform you that my husband, Jair Bolsonaro, is being monitored in the hospital for abdominal discomfort as a result of the stab wound he received in 2018,” his wife, Michele, told her 5.8 million followers on Instagram.
Ms Bolsonaro added that loved ones are “praying for his health”.
Bolsonaro, 67, has a non-serious intestinal obstruction that is unlikely to require surgery, said Bolsonaro’s doctor.
About 1,500 of his supporters were arrested following the invasion of Brazil’s Congress, presidential palace and Supreme Court over the weekend.
The far-right former prime minister traveled to the US days before his term ends and said he planned to stay there until the end of January – but now plans to return to Brazil earlier to see his doctors.
However, his ability to remain in the United States, where he traveled on a visa issued to heads of state and other government officials, is in question.

Texas Democratic congressman Joaquin Castro said the US should not give sanctuary to an “authoritarian who inspired domestic terrorism” and called on Mr Bolsonaro – who faces multiple investigations before Brazil’s Supreme Court – to leave.
The US government declined to comment on Bolsonaro’s current visa status.
But a US State Department spokesperson said a person who entered on a visa for foreign officials must leave within 30 days, or apply for a change of immigration status if they are no longer engaged in official business.
History of Jair Bolsonaro’s Health Problems
Jair Bolsonaro has suffered a series of health problems since taking office in 2019, with many linked when he was fatally stabbed in the stomach during his 2018 presidential campaign – leaving him with serious internal bleeding and intestinal damage.
The former Brazilian Prime Minister entered a medical facility in Brasilia in July 2021 after suffering 10 days of unwavering hiccups.
Bolsonaro told a Brazilian radio station that he hiccups “24 hours a day,” blaming the condition for affecting his ability to speak.
He went to the hospital “just fine” – but hours later he was flown to Sao Paulo for possible emergency surgery to remove an intestinal blockage.
He was hospitalized in January last year after apparently failing to properly chew the shrimp he ate for Sunday lunch.
He shared a photo of himself in the hospital on Twitter telling followers that he will be tested for possible surgery to treat an internal blockage in the abdominal region.
Vice-President Hamilton Mora reportedly told Brazilian newspaper O Globo in November last year that the far-right striker apparently was unable to wear shorts due to a skin infection on his leg.
In 2020, Mr Bolsonaro laughed when he revealed during a live TV broadcast that he had “mold” in his lungs after spending weeks in isolation with COVID-19 – having previously described the virus as just a “little flu”.
Thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace in Brazil, in a terrifying echo of the riots in the US Capitol by supporters of former US President Donald Trump.
The unrest follows the inauguration of left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who unseated Bolsonaro in one of the toughest presidential races with 50.9% of the vote.
Da Silva accused the rioters of trying to overthrow democracy and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
