TEMPO.CO, AMBON – An island suddenly appears above sea level in the waters in the islands of Tanimbar Regency, Maluku, after a devastating 7.5-magnitude earthquake on Tuesday morning, January 10, 2023. The ocean is stirring fear among the residents of the northern village of Tanimbar.

Village chief Pony Kilmascuso described what an island was. “A pile of material emerged that formed into the shape of an island. We have ordered villagers to evacuate temporarily,” Pony told Tempo.

Coordinator of the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) Category 1 Ambon Luthvi Bari, explained that further examination of the accident is required to explain the phenomenon scientifically.

However, Lutfi said the most plausible explanation regarding the island based on the currently limited observation would be volcanic mud. Lutfi said, “It has not yet been completed whether the phenomenon is a secondary result of the earthquake or not.”

The 7.5-magnitude earthquake originated 136 kilometers off the coast of southeast West Maluku and from a depth of 130 kilometers or a low center. The earthquake itself is said to have been caused by submersion activities in the Banda Sea and was measured on a V scale on the MMI scale.

According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the earthquake damaged at least 92 homes and two educational facilities in the Tanimbar Regency Islands. Dawilor-Dawira district suffered most of the damage.
