The Met said Counter Terrorism Command was contacted in December after finding “a very small amount of contaminated material,” which was determined to be contaminated with uranium.

Commander Richard Smith said there was no danger to the public due to the incident.

“I want to reassure the public that the amount of contaminated material was very small and has been assessed by experts as not posing any threat to the public,” he said.

“While our investigation is still ongoing, from our investigations to date, it does not appear to be linked to any immediate threat. However, as the public would expect, we will continue to pursue all available lines of investigation to ensure that this is a definite case.”

“However, it highlights the excellent ability we and our partners have to monitor our ports and borders in order to keep the public safe from any potential threats to their safety and security that may come into the UK,” he added.

The package reportedly arrived in the hold of an Oman Air passenger plane from Muscat in Oman, before alarms were sounded.
