American football player Damar Hamlin, who collapsed and suffered a heart attack during a game last week, has been released from hospital in Buffalo.

Hamlin had to be turned over twice after he suddenly fell to the ground during the game against the Cincinnati Bengals on January 2.

For about a week, doctors deemed his condition “critical” but the 24-year-old slowly began communicating by writing.

Then he started holding people’s hands and their breathing tube was removed.

His team, the Buffalo Bills, confirmed on Wednesday that he has been released from the hospital and will continue his rehabilitation at home.

A statement released by them said Hamlin underwent “a series of cardiovascular, neurological and vascular tests” prior to his release, and that doctors were “confident that Dammar can be released safely”.

A GoFundMe page, which Hamlin set up to support young people through education and sport, has reached more than $8.6m (£7.1m) in donations after he went into cardiac arrest – up from its initial target of just $2,500 (£2,000).

He is also said to use some of the proceeds from the sale of new T-shirts emblazoned with the words “Did We Win?” (reportedly the first words he said on coming) along with his hands in the shape of a heart, to raise money for the Cincinnati medical facility that treated him.

Since his collapse, players and fans of American football and many other sports around the world have shown their support as Hamlin recovers – paying tribute to his No. 3 jersey in countless ways.

Medical personnel were forced to rush onto the field in Cincinnati to administer Hamlin CPR for approximately 10 minutes.

An ambulance then drove to the pitch, where the crowd fell silent and his teammates gathered to pray.
