BRIT Awards 2023: Wheat Legg and Harry Styles lead male-dominated nominations | Brit Awards

A year after the Brit Awards ditched gender categories, the nominations for Alternative Artist of the Year are all-male, including Central C, Stormzy, Fred Again, George Ezra and Harry Styles.

The awards ceremony, run by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), has annulled Best Male and Best British Female in 2022 after criticism that non-binary pop star Sam Smith would not be eligible for either award despite their massive commercial success.

This year, Smith received a nomination for Song of the Year for Unholy — their collaboration with German pop star Kim Petras — and pop/R&B act, one of the genre categories first introduced in 2022, which will be decided by a public vote on TikTok. From January 19th.

Styles joins the Wet Leg of first-time nominees in leading nominations for this year’s Brit Awards with four nods each. Isle of Wight indie duo, ubiquitous pop icon and former One Direction member will go head-to-head in the Album of the Year category, joined by multiple 1975 nominees Stormzy and producer Fred Again.

Wet Leg had yet to release their debut album at the time of the 2022 Brit Awards: their self-titled effort, released on the indie label Domino, was hailed by The Guardian as “a collection of ’90s-era 2000s take on dreamy turns”. lush, resounding, resounding, and overgrown with verse imbued with millennial indignation, anxiety, and confusion.” They’re nominated for five Grammys this year, which takes place the week before the Brit Awards.

Female-led businesses accounted for 33% of all nominations. After Wet Leg, the only other female artists to receive multiple nods are producer Eliza Rose, whose collaboration with Interplanetary Criminal, Baddest of Them All, became a smash hit in the summer of 2022, seeing her nominated for Song of the Year and Best Dance Act. ; and rock duo Nova Twins, nominated for Group of the Year and Best Alternative/Rock.

Last year, Little Simz won Best New Artist, despite releasing their debut album six years ago; However, she became eligible for the award only after her 2021 album. Sometimes I May Be Introverted became her first number one in the UK Albums Chart, and reached No. 4 this year Rapper Koji Radical appears in a similar situation: He’s been active since 2014, but his 2022 album Reasons to Smile was his first charting album, reaching No. 11.

Also of note in the Best New Artist category for the inclusion of British-Japanese pop star Rina Sawayama. In 2020, she confirmed that she would not be eligible for the Brit Awards and Mercury Prize, both of which are run by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI): Born in Japan and raised in the UK since the age of four, she is not British. In February 2021, the BPI changed the rules to require that artists who have resided permanently in the UK for five years will qualify for the British categories. In the international categories, Beyoncé, Lizzo, and Taylor Swift lead the pack with two nominations each.

Other noteworthy nominations include Bad Boy Chiller Crew collegiate Bradford bassline, group of the year – and likely to add some welcome mayhem to the live broadcast – Eurovision star Sam Ryder for best new artist, Ed Sheeran and Elton John’s 2021 celebratory hit, Birthday Majid for Best Song.

It was previously announced that British girl group Flow has won the Rising Star award. This year’s Producer and Songwriter Awards will be announced at a later date.

Comedian Mo Gilligan will present this year’s BRIT Awards and it will take place live at the London O2 Arena on February 11. Wet Leg and Sam Smith, performing alongside Kim Petras, are the first live performances to be confirmed.
