Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton has been charged with drink driving after police stopped his car and arrested him earlier today.
Northumbria Police said the Brazilian was arrested at 1.20am and will appear in court later this month.
The force said: “Officers stopped a car in the Puntland Road area of Newcastle and arrested its occupant.
Joelinton Casio, 26, of Puntland, has since been charged with driving while over the alcohol limit.
He is due to appear before the magistrates in Newcastle on January 26.”
Newcastle United are aware of the incident but have not commented.
The 26-year-old has been a vital part of Eddie Howe’s side this season, making 21 appearances in all competitions so far.
He scored the second goal on Tuesday night in Newcastle’s 2-0 Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Leicester City.
Jolinton moved to Tyneside in 2019 following his £40m move from German club Hoffenheim.
