An eyewitness said a woman slashed to death at a camel spot in Surrey was attacked by “several dogs” and shouted at passers-by to “go back”.

Paramedics were unable to save the 28-year-old victim after she was attacked in Graveley Hill, Caterham, on Thursday.

A second woman who received treatment for dog bites has since left the hospital.

An eyewitness told Sky News she was riding a horse with her friend when they saw the woman who was killed on the ground “being attacked by several dogs”.

“She yelled at us to get back up and with that,” said Sue Dove, “two loose dogs ran at us and the horses…my horse turned and went off and I finally fell.”

The witness said she was left with “many different feelings”.

She added, “(I feel) sad that a woman lost her life, but frustrated people can walk many dogs.

“This lady was clearly out of control for whatever reason, as she fell to the ground and was attacked.

On account of those consequences and dogs running towards us, my horse sprang off and I fell off my horse, landing on my right side, on my rib and hip.

“Luckily, my horse eventually stopped and my friend was able to get to him. Otherwise, as flying animals, this would have been another terrible accident if he kept going.”

A popular area for dog walkers

Surrey Police have arrested a total of eight dogs and detectives are keeping the owners updated on the investigation.

No arrests have been made.

Richard Bream, who runs nearby Mardens Kennels, said he had never heard of a dog attack in the area.

He said, “This particular area, point of view, is an area where professional dog walkers will come in their truck and take the dogs outside and lead them around.

“I always felt like you see some dog walkers have five or six people, and they shouldn’t be able to do that.”

A man at an address close to the scene of the accident, who asked not to be named, said: “The dogs dispersed in separate areas of the forest and the police helicopter was looking for them.”

Tragic incident

A woman who was walking a border collie in the area, who asked not to be named, said she was shocked by the incident.

“It’s a nice, circular walk in the woods and we’ve never had any problems before. It’s pretty awful, normal dogs definitely wouldn’t do it,” she said.

An autopsy examination will be carried out by the Coroner in Surrey.

In an update on Friday, Inspector Lindsey Whatley, the town chief in Tandridge, said: “This is a tragic incident in which a young woman sadly lost her life and our thoughts are with her family and friends.

“I know yesterday’s events will be of real concern to the local community and I would like to reassure residents that we are confident all dogs involved are in police custody while we investigate the circumstances of what happened.

“Officers will remain in the Gravelly Hill area today while inquiries continue and if you have any information but have not yet spoken to police please contact us.”
