Manchester United pulled off a stunning late conversion to come from behind and defeat Manchester City in a dramatic derby at Old Trafford.

City looked to be closing the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal after substitute Jack Grealish saw them head in from Kevin De Bruyne’s cross on the hour, only for United to send their fans roaring joyfully.

Erik Ten Hag’s side controversially equalized with 12 minutes remaining as Bruno Fernandes scored despite Marcus Rashford being in an offside position, ignoring City’s protests that he interfered with play despite the flag being raised.

Rashford was the central figure again four minutes later when he slotted in substitute Alejandro Garnacho’s cross at the Stretford End to move United one point clear of City, who are still five points behind Arsenal.

United make a statement

United left the Etihad Stadium in early October bruised up after a 6-3 thrashing, a result that had already stunned them – but Ten Hag insisted lessons had been learned.

And so they did. The win means United have lost just one of their 19 matches in all competitions and are now on the heels of City third in the table, barely credible after that derby defeat and a horrible start to the season which saw them lose at home to Brighton. before being overshadowed at Brentford.

The debate over Fernandes’ equalizer will continue, but what is inevitable is the marked improvement under ten Hag’s discipline and tactical brilliance to the point where United look solid in the top four, perhaps even catching a glimpse of leaders Arsenal, who are six points clear of them.

The sight of little Luke Shaw winning with a series of headers between Erling Haaland and others in stoppage time and Raphael Varane fist-pumping and furious with the crowd at the final whistle was a sign of the renewed faith and confidence surging through United.

Undeterred, the reborn Rashford wasted two chances in the first half to swoop in and turn Garnacho’s cross past City keeper Ederson to seal the win.

United’s recovery was slow but sure under Ten Hag and the sights at the final whistle showed the lost giants being slow to find themselves again.
