A British woman has died after being caught in an avalanche while hiking with two other people on Mont Blanc in the French Alps, rescue services said.

The accident occurred on Saturday on the Argentière glacier, one of the largest glaciers in the Mont Blanc mountain range.

Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe at 4,800 meters (about 16,000 feet), attracts 20,000 hikers and skiers each year.

The 45-year-old woman and her partner were hiking with a mountain guide when an avalanche buried them around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Le Figaro newspaper.

The Police High Mountains (PGHM) Platoon in Chamonix said that despite the intervention of the emergency services, it “unfortunately died”.

The police ordered an investigation into the accident and an autopsy. Authorities said the other two hikers were unharmed.

Local officials warn that Mont Blanc’s popularity poses a growing security and environmental challenge. Warmer temperatures in recent years have thawed the permafrost, increasing the risk of rock falls on the most common roads.

In August, authorities closed two popular mountain shelters used by Mont Blanc climbers because of a potentially fatal drought-induced rock fall.

It is also believed that melting snow contributes to avalanches.
