Arsenal are believed to be monitoring Rafinha’s position at Barcelona after losing Michailo Modric to Chelsea.

Modric wasn’t the only striker Arsenal were looking for this window and the club would still be ready for an opportunity should it arise.

Rafinha is a player Arsenal have been tracking for the past year.

Arsenal made a bid to sign Rafinha last summer while he was at Leeds, before the Brazil international winger completed a £55m move to Barcelona.

“It’s a dream come true since I was a kid,” said Rafinha when he joined Barcelona.

However, this move did not go as he would have liked, as the winger has started only seven matches in the league this season.

Chelsea signed Modric for £88.5m on an eight-and-a-half-year deal

Chelsea completed the signing of Modric from Shakhtar Donetsk on Sunday in a deal worth £88.5m.

Modric earlier indicated that Premier League leaders Arsenal is his preferred destination in a series of his social media posts. Arsenal have been in talks as recently as Friday, but were willing to walk away from a transfer if the deal didn’t turn out right.

Mykhailo Modric, Chelsea’s new signing, was shown at Stamford Bridge at half time of their match against Crystal Palace.

But Chelsea agreed a deal with Shakhtar on Saturday night and the 22-year-old traveled to west London to complete a medical before signing an eight-and-a-half-year contract.

“I am very happy to sign for Chelsea,” Modric said.

“This is a huge club, in a great league and it’s a very attractive project for me at this point in my career. I’m excited to meet my new team-mates and I look forward to working and learning under Graham Potter and his staff.”

New Chelsea signing Mykhailo Modric will join his ‘army of strikers’, Gary Neville says, as the Ukraine striker joined the club at the expense of Arsenal

Gary Neville on Super Sunday:

“Chelsea have done their best for him and Arsenal will be disappointed.

“I was in Arsenal’s last Premier League game against Newcastle where they had no substitute to make and obviously they had [Gabriel] Jesus hurt, so they need someone.

“They did not prioritize it. Chelsea entered, and they have an army of strikers, and it is an ambitious project, as we say in Chelsea.”
