A spokesman for Pokhara Airport said the pilot of the Yeti Airlines plane that crashed on Sunday asked the airport to change the runway minutes before his plane sank into a deep gorge.

The pilot did not mention “anything untoward” to air traffic control and asked to shift from runway 3 to runway 1, Anoop Joshi said, adding that weather conditions were good for a safe landing that day.

Yeti Airlines twin-engine ATR 72 was carrying 72 people – four crew members and 68 passengers – when it crashed near the airport in the tourist city of Pokhara.

The bodies of 68 people have been recovered, while four people are still missing.

No survivors were found and a local official said hopes of finding any were “nil”.

While the search continued, salvage teams were able to recover both the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder from the wreckage.

An official at Kathmandu airport said the boxes were in good condition and would be sent for analysis.

Meanwhile, a video shot and broadcast on Facebook Live by a passenger in the last moments of the flight is widely shared.
