SAN SALVADOR (Reuters) – At least 130 homes have been affected by a wave of seismic activity in El Salvador, leaving more than a dozen people in shelters, the government of the Central American country said on Monday.

Authorities reported 219 earthquakes from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning.

No deaths were reported, but the tremors damaged homes and caused at least 20 landslides, prompting officials to declare a high alert for cities in Ahuachapan province, the epicenter of the seismic activity.

“We are working on evaluating homes in order to meet the needs of residents,” Luis Amaya, director of El Salvador’s Civil Protection Agency, told a news conference.

Experts from the Civil Protection said that the largest earthquake occurred at 5:07 pm on Sunday, with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale and a shallow depth of nine kilometers in the municipality of San Lorenzo.

Crews of public servants arrived at the scene on Monday to clear debris, while authorities set up eight emergency shelters in the area.
