A 6.3-magnitude earthquake hits Japan

Istanbul:

A strong earthquake struck Japan on Monday.

According to the US Geological Survey, the 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Izu-Ogasawara Islands, south of the capital, Tokyo, at about 0449 GMT.

The earthquake was estimated to have a depth of 409.1 kilometers (254.2 mi).

The islands lie 1,000 kilometers (621.3 miles) south of the capital.
