Bridgwater crash: Double-decker bus carrying Hinkley workers last overturned in crash on A39

A major accident has been announced this morning after a double decker bus carrying 70 workers to Hinkley Point C on the A39 near Bridgwater overturned.

No one died in the accident but several people were injured. Police say it is too early to say whether their injuries are life-threatening or life-altering.

Emergency services, including air ambulance, were first called to the A39 Quantock Road, near Cannington, at approximately 6am this morning (17 January). The accident occurred between the bus and a motorcyclist.

Dozens of Hinkley Point C workers on their way to work were injured in the accident.

The closure is in place at the junction of Sandford Hill and Quantock Road. Travel to and from Hinkley Point C has been suspended.

Speaking at a news conference this afternoon, Inspector Rebecca Wells-Cole confirmed the presence of 70 Hinkley Point C workers in addition to the driver.

It said there were no deaths but several people were taken to hospital. She said it was “too early” to ascertain the severity of their injuries.

Inseb Wells Cole said 54 people had been triaged at the scene and 26 had sustained injuries. A number of others were taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, Musgrove Hospital in Taunton and the Minor Trauma Unit in Bridgwater.

“The accident was initially announced as a major accident due to the number of people involved and the resources required,” Insp Wells-Cole added. This has since been abandoned.”

It comes after Avon and Somerset Police received more than 100 reports of road-related accidents in just five hours last night (16 January).

Between 6pm and 11pm, there were 53 accidents, mostly due to icy and dangerous driving conditions.

A South Western Ambulance spokesperson said: “Please use caution when traveling this morning, conditions are very cold due to freezing temperatures overnight and water remaining on the road from last week’s wet weather.”

A Hinkley Point C spokesperson said: “A bus carrying members of the Hinkley Point C workforce has been involved in a traffic incident on the A39 in Bridgwater.

“Emergency services at the scene and travel to and from the site has been suspended.”
