The world’s oldest known centenarian, French nun Lucille Randon, has died at the age of 118, according to his spokesperson.

Known as Sister Andre, Randon was born in the south of France on February 11, 1904, when World War I was still a decade away.

She died in her sleep in the nursing home in Toulon, a spokesman for David Tavella said on Tuesday.

“There is great sadness but … it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it’s liberating,” Tavela of a nursing home in Sainte-Catherine-Laboure told AFP.

The sister has long been celebrated as the oldest European, before Japanese Ken Tanaka died at the age of 119 last year, making her the tallest living person on Earth.

Randon was born the year New York opened its first subway and when the Tour de France was staged only once.

She worked as a ruler and teacher before entering a convent in 1944, at the age of 40. She has been in nursing homes since 1979 and in a Toulon home since 2009.

In 2021, she survived a bout with Covid-19 after the virus swept through the nursing home where she was living, killing 10 other residents.

At the time, she told Far Mateen, “I didn’t even realize I had it.”

Tavela told the newspaper that the nun showed no fear of the virus.

“She didn’t ask me about her health, but about her routine. She wanted to know, for example, if meal and bedtime times would change. She showed no fear of illness, in fact she was more worried about other residents,” said Tavela.

Asked if the nun was afraid of catching Covid, she told French BFM TV: “No, I wasn’t afraid because I wasn’t afraid of dying… I’m happy to be with you, but I wish I could be somewhere else – join my older brother and grandfather.” And my grandmother.

In 2020, Randon told French radio that she did not know how she had lived this long. “I have no idea what the secret is. Only God can answer that question,” she said.
