Apple has just unveiled a bunch of new Macs, with what it says are new chips that are dramatically faster.

All of the new PCs are powered by the new M2 Pro and M2 Max, which are advanced versions of the M2 chip first unveiled in laptops last summer.

The new chips come in a variety of new computers: the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, and the new Mac Mini. All of these computers retain the same exterior design as before, but Apple promises that they are much faster on the inside.

This is the first time that Apple’s Mac Mini has included high-end “professional” versions of Apple’s chips, where previously it could only include the regular M1. It was one of the first PCs to get an M1 chip — Apple’s first in-house designed processor — but it hasn’t changed since it did in 2020.

The new 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,999 or £2,149, and the larger 16-inch model starts at $2,499 or $2,699. The Mac Mini with the regular M2 starts at $599 or £649, and the one with the M2 Pro costs $1,299 or £1,399.

All are available to order today and will arrive with customers and in stores next week.

Older versions of computers have been removed from sale. This includes the Mac Mini which incorporated the Intel chips that powered Macs before Apple introduced its own processors – making the Mac Pro the only computer to retain this technology.

Apple claimed the new M2 Pro is 40 percent faster at processing images in Photoshop than the MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro inside, and it’s 25 percent faster at compiling new code in Xcode. It said graphics speeds are up to 30 percent faster.

But Apple has given few granular details about how much faster the new computers are than their predecessors. It announced the new PCs in a press release, rather than a live event.

However, Apple did post a video on its website that looked as if it had been created for one of its full advertising events. Reports suggested that Apple was planning a January event to unveil its widely rumored augmented reality glasses — and the Mac-centric video may have been made for it.

The new chips don’t seem to offer additional features or a new design when compared to both the M2 from last year and the M1 Pro and Max chips that first arrived in the larger versions of the MacBook Pro when they were unveiled in October 2021.

Instead, Apple indicated that the new chips were intended to build on this foundation while increasing performance. Combined, the improvements mean the new chips are “the world’s most powerful and energy-efficient chip for a professional laptop,” Apple said, though it offered little information on how it reached that conclusion.
