Labor is seeking to protect workers’ working rights from being scrapped as part of a controversial EU law bill that has been retained by ministers by forcing the House of Commons to vote on the subject on Wednesday.
The party fears that basic rights, including maternity protection and holiday entitlement, could be abolished under government plans to “repeal” 4,000 Brussels-derived laws by the end of this year.
The bill, which goes back to the House of Commons on Thursday, repeals all EU laws that have not been proactively adopted by the government.
A number of senior Conservative MPs have criticized Rishi Sunak’s attempt to move the bill forward and backed an amendment aimed at giving MPs greater oversight over the repeal of thousands of EU laws.
Among them: David Davis, the pro-Brexiter. former Minister of Justice Robert Buckland; Caroline Knox, Chair of the House of Commons Women and Equality Committee; and Sir Bob Neill, Chairman of the Justice Committee.
Labor MP Stella Creasy, who leads the amendment and is chair of the Labor Movement for Europe, told the Guardian: “The consequences of accidentally deleting laws that affect people’s lives are enormous. This bill represents a huge opportunity for a rooster, as a minister will hit the delete button on something he does not realize he has omitted.” .
“It has nothing to do with Brexit, otherwise the Brexiteers will not support the amendments we propose. Deleting everything and giving ministers powers to do so does not mean taking back control, it simply consolidates control in Downing Street, not our Parliament. Rishi Sunak has to defend On Parliamentary Sovereignty”.
Reiterating that Labor stands by the working people, Shadow Employment Secretary Justin Madres said: “Once again the Tories are trying to strip workers of their rights and protections at work.
“The Government’s plans to allow the Foreign Secretary to overturn vital employment protections is an affront to the British people’s hard-won rights to work.”
Labor’s move follows allegations that human rights are being compromised by the government’s rush to drop up to 4,000 EU laws.
Human rights and equality organizations have written to the government notifying them that they have identified a number of provisions in the retained EU bill that “risk breaching” the “international legal obligation” set out in the Northern Ireland Exit Protocol to uphold rights set out in the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.
The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission and the Northern Ireland Equality Commission say that unless the Bill is amended to address these concerns, “there is a risk that the human rights and equality legislation relevant to Article 2 of the Protocol will not be preserved, restated or restated – enacted in time.” the appropriate “.

He also says that rushing to enact the bill and expire EU legislation by the end of 2023 under “time-lapse provisions” would mean “a failure to consult” with the bodies established to ensure respect for equality and human rights in post-conflict societies.
Article 2 of the Protocol is based on the recognition that equality and human rights are central to the Good Friday Agreement. In addition, it ensures that the UK government will “keep up” with EU equality laws to ensure that the agreement is upheld in all its parts.
She cites it along with six other directives supporting the peace agreement, including a victim directive, parental leave directive, and directive for pregnant workers.
Sunak’s spokesperson said ministers “have clear control over what needs to be done”, adding that “the public wants to see action taken quickly”.
When asked about the timeline for updates to the initiative, he said: “I think some of this work can be done and delivered very quickly. Some will take longer to develop, but it will be the departments that will provide the updates.”
