The government announced yesterday that it will introduce a ban on conversion therapy, including for transgender people. Kemi Badnoch, the equality minister, is set to write to all Tory MPs to insist that bans on transgender therapy should not criminalize parents (you can read the full story here).

Robert Jenrick, the Immigration Minister, said this morning that the government’s aim is to bring about legislation that strikes a balance between stopping “malignant activities” and ensuring that “well-meaning loved ones and trusted advisors for children can give the support and advice they need to do”.

He told Sky News: “We are all in favor of abolishing conversion therapies which are insidious attempts to convince people to live lives outside of their own sex, and so banning people from taking this type of course or intervention is absolutely the right thing to do.

“But this is a much more complex issue than it might seem at first glance. What we don’t want to happen are parents, loved ones, teachers and people who want to provide support and advice to children who have been put off or so criminalised.

“If you are a young transgender person or considering issues related to trans, it is absolutely right to be able to turn to your parents or trusted adults for support and advice at the time, and as a parent, it is absolutely right that I can offer that kind of advice and support to my child without fear.” from being criminalized or having some other penalty as a result of doing so.

“So the way this new law needs to be framed is one that strikes that balance so that malignant activities are criminalized and history, but well-meaning loved ones and trusted advisors to children can provide the support and advice that they need to do.”
