After completing the sale on Wednesday, Spofforth told The Telegraph that the buyer was “very excited” about his purchase.

“I can’t tell you how stressful it is to watch that time and hope it’s better,” he said.

“If it’s that big, everyone bids at the last minute, so it’s very stressful to watch.”

He added: “You look at the intrinsic value of a piece like that and you think it’s worth X amount and you have no idea how much you should have originally put in, being a great story behind it.

“So we put together a number that you think is fair and then it works even better than that, so we’re all very happy.”

He said the late Princess Diana was the driving force behind the high figure, saying she was the “ultimate” reason it sold for more than twice the estimated price.

“It’s not easy to wear a cross on its own…so if it didn’t have a Diana provenance at all, it wouldn’t even vaguely come close to that price, so the provenance was the basis,” he said.

“She was a style icon of her time, not only was she a princess and famous for marrying into the royal family, but she did a great deal of charity work and went to a great number of charity events.”

The cross pendant has a total weight of approximately 5.25 carats.
