Murray looked to build on his thrilling opening win over Matteo Berrettini after the 35-year-old rallied back to claim a stunning five-set victory over the 13th seed, his best Grand Slam result in half a decade.

Murray now faces 26-year-old Australian Kokkinakis in what should be a vital encounter at the Margaret Court Arena. A former top 10 junior player, Kokkinakis’ promising career has been derailed by injury and he currently finds himself outside the top 100, but he will have the support of the home crowd as he looks to reach the third round of the Australian Open. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic battled French qualifier Enzo Quacode in the main match at Rod Laver Arena. Regardless of the outcome, this was another exhilarating match that only Andy Murray seemed to be able to deliver. He did have a capable partner in Thanasi Kokkinakis who kept his composure and skill throughout.

Murray was never defeated to his last breath, however, and two powerful forehand hits put him up 40-15 in the next game.

Kokkinakis’ slightly soft backhand allowed Murray to run behind the ball and land a forehand into the right corner forcing the Australian to unbalance his long return shot.

How did that happen? And Murray fixed Kokkinakis’s second serve with a strong forehand kick in the cross courts, but the Australian player reached the wide ball and put it back into play with such speed from the backhand kick that Murray could not respond to.

Kokkinakis then sweeps it to 40-0 in no time and, after dropping the next point, takes the match with a header.

They are flying through this group now.

‘Let’s go!’ Kokkinakis cheers as he throws a beautiful backhand down the line to score the winner past Murray.

The next two points go to Murray with Kokkinakis unable to repeat his shot down the line and find the net.

Murray then targets Kokkinakis’ backhand with powerful forehand strikes to the far corner and picks up another point as the Australian slots home again.

The Scotsman wins the match with a mad backhand shot leaving Kokkinakis confused on the other side of the field.
