The US Geological Survey reported that a 3.5-magnitude earthquake rocked the Hollister area of California.
The 2.3-mile-deep quake struck about two miles from San Juan Bautista at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, January 19, according to the USGS.
Dozens of people from as far away as Antioch and San Bruno reported feeling the earthquake to the agency.
Hollister is a city of 42,000 residents located 45 miles southeast of San Jose and east of Monterey Bay.
Magnitude measures the energy released by the earthquake’s source, says the USGS. It replaces the old Richter scale.
Earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 to 5.4 are often felt but rarely cause severe damage, according to Michigan Tech. Earthquakes of less than 2.5 magnitude are rarely felt by most people.
